Ashe County was once a highly remote area of the NC Blue Ridge Mountain wilderness near the North Carolina and Virginia state lines. Filled with logging roads and remote wagon pathways, Ashe County's first settlers were mostly hunters. Today,
Ashe County NC is home to more than 25,000 residents and is a highly accessible mountain region. Major highways include Hwy 16, 88, 163, and 221, and Ashe County has its own Ashe County Airport. Boasting a 4,300
foot runway, the Ashe County Airport was built in 1977 and serves small and medium sized jets.
The communities of Todd NC, Fleetwood, Lansing,
Glendale Springs, Warrensville, Creston, Crumpler, Beaver Creek, Shatley Springs, Jefferson and West Jefferson
boast well maintained roads and some private and state maintained dirt roads. Generally speaking, the more remote the area, the better your chances are of coming to a dirt road. The Virginia Creeper Railroad passes through the county and created a famous biking road, Railroad Grade Road which runs from Fleetwood NC in Ashe County to the charming river community of Todd which lies on the Watauga and Ashe County borders. Cyclists enjoy this road and many of the local stores offer bike rentals for the day or half day should you want to bike along the scenic New River found along Railroad Grade Road in Ashe County.
